So much delicious food here! I love pomegranates. Think I need to start going to the store and picking up a random fruit/vegetable that I’ve never had before and try it… could be a fun experiment!
I can definitely believe those results. It is sad, but I think most children, especially those low income families, aren’t as exposed to the wonderful world of fresh fruits and veggies. They may eat them, but don’t know what they look like before they become broccoli with cheese sauce. 🙂
Great list. I have to say that travel has been the best thing for me regarding seeing and trying new fruits and veggies. Even just throughout the US you can find such variation.
Great post and list! Yes as a kid, I was heavy into meat, meat, meat, but some where along the way, I vegged out, and it has made all the difference. A good difference that is!
I can’t tell you the last time I even saw a pomegranate but turnips now, we eat those all the time in the South. I chop them and mix them with the greens when I cook them. I also like them mashed with potatoes. When I was on the Atkins diet (yes I did) one time, I lived on mashed turnips and rutabagas fried. I think, because the weather is so great on the Coast where I live, we tend to eat a wide variety of fresh veggies throughout the year. I wish we could grow asparagus down here, I would have it steamed in butter for Breakfast. Oh, and the only artichokes I have tasted are the marinated hearts in a jar.
Why are we fat in the South if we eat so many veggies? Simple. We season everything with bacon grease, ham hocks or smoked sausage. We really don’t eat a lot of meat though. But when you season like this and eat corn bread on the side with a big glass of iced tea or cold milk, you get a lot of calories.
