On The Road in New Mexico

Last Wednesday I flew to Albuquerque, New Mexico to work.

It was nice to travel for work and still be in my same time zone (that rarely happens!).

The teammates at the Albuquerque site were all very welcoming and receptive. We are already planning my trip back there next year during the October Hot Air Balloon Festival.

Here’s some of the workshop participants during the “how to read labels” portion of the class.

After two on-site office workshops and one hospital workshop at Albuquerque’s Presbyterian Hospital I headed to Taos for the weekend.

Taos is the home of one of my most Treasured Healthy Discoveries. I hesitate to expose this unknown treasure because it’s been my private retreat for almost 8-years now. But the CBS Morning News just did a story about it a couple weeks ago, so my secret is out.

The “it” I’m talking about is Earthships. Have you heard of them? Actually, I’m glad CBS aired this video. It’s much easier to watch a 4-minute news clip then it is for me to write six paragraphs trying to describe an Earthship. Go on, watch this CBS video , they’ll explain the sustainable, off the grid, solar generated New Mexico homes/Earthships much better than I can.

Okay, kind of weird huh? Seriously, these sustainable homes are very cozy and relaxing environments. I love booking return visits to this B&B.

This is the view of the Dobson House/Earthship B&B as I’m driving toward it…

The glass bottles and tires used to make walls.

The solar panels that generate all the energy for the Dobson Earthship.

The front entrance and the stairs that lead up to the kitchen and great room.

Inside the Dobson House/Earthship

Joan Dobson is a retired English Literature Professor and librarian from SMU. John Dobson is a retired Engineer and Professor from North Texas. They built this Earthship with their own hands fifteen years ago and they have been running their Earthship B&B for the past twelve years. People travel from all over the world to stay in their unique B&B.

Joan makes breakfast every morning and she will accommodate food allergy/gluten free requests. This weekend she made great quiche and served us plumcots (plum and apricot cross). Hmmm, I’ve never had a plumcot but it was sweet and good!

During Saturday and Sunday morning breakfast we had a bird’s eye view of the Taos hot air balloons taking weekend guests out for a ride.

I ran (okay, walked quickly) down the hill and took a picture of a hot air balloon as it drifted by the Dobson Earthship.

I kept walking

And reached the Rio Grande Gorge.

I sat here and soaked in the silence.

I love coming to the Dobson’s Earthship B&B when I crave open space. This trip I drank in the silence. I turned off my BlackBerry and computer for 48 hours and the New Mexico high desert rejuvenated me once again.

If you’re interested in sustainable building and you don’t mind dirt roads, disconnecting from the TV, computer and phone for a couple of days. If sleeping in complete silence with no city lights and a clear view of the stars at 7,000 feet makes your soul sing; you’ll love this New Mexico retreat.

The Dobson House is one of my favorite Healthy Discoveries. The Dobson’s are delightful, lovely people and I’ve grown very fond of them over the years. If you make a reservation please tell them that I sent you and I can’t wait to visit them again very soon!
