Acai-The Incredible Purple Berry
Have you heard of it? I had not, until just recently. This is what I discovered.
2. Tastes like a cross between berries and chocolate.
3. The berry is 90% seeds.
4. Found in the Amazon Rainforest of Northern Brazil.
5. Massive amounts of antioxidants including; anthocyanins, catechin, quercetin, flavonols, proanthocyanidins, and trans-reseveratrol.
7. 10 times the antioxidant level of grapes and twice that of blueberries.
8. Considered to have the best nutrient value of any fruit on earth!
9. Acai has one of the highest ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) ratings of any fruit and vegetable.
10. 50% of the Acai berry is comprised of healthy Omega 6 & 9 fats.
11. Contains 19 different amino acids.
12. Nearly one-third of its mass is dietary fiber.
13. 100 g serving of the Acai freeze dried powder provides the recommended daily fiber for adults (20-30 g).
14. A rich source of beta-carotene, vitamins C, D, E, B-complex and an array of trace minerals.
15. Nicholas Perricone M.D. author of The Wrinkle Cure, says; “this little berry is one of the most nutritious and powerful foods in the world.” He includes Acai in his Top 10 Superfoods.
16. Acai rapidly deteriorates after harvest. Freeze drying the fruit within a 1/2 hour of picking is the best way to lock in the antioxidant capacity. Acai degrades so quickly you won’t find the actual berry in your grocery store.
There are some companies that have mixed Acai with Pomegranate to make juice. A couple multi-level marketing companies are making various Acai juices, powders and capsules. However, I’m very skeptical about how much of the antioxidant level these products retain.
Right now I recommend a freeze dried powder and the only one that has been tested and verified to have the high ORAC reading.
